| I am determined to make a difference in the world of children through leadership and dedication. The young ones begging for sustenance in the shadows of the beautiful Taj Mahal is a haunting memory for me. Consequently, my volunteer and paid positions have involved helping children. I teach tennis on a volunteer basis at the Boys
and Girls Clubs in Detroit and USTA community outreach programs since I am a nationally ranked tennis player, having played competitive tennis for nine years. At Balavihar, I teach children about Indian history, religion, and
culture. I am deeply concerned about environmental degradation. Next month I begin a research project on green roofs. Having been captain of the varsity tennis team for two years and class board treasurer for four years, I hope
to lead efforts in sustainable business development to eradicate poverty among children and preserve nature. |

| A passionate individual who finds meaning in all facets of life, John has been privileged to enjoy the American dream. In scientific research, he has developed conductive/magnetic polymers within pathogendetecting biosensors, allowing him to become 1st place winner of the International BioGENEius Challenge and Intel Science Talent Search Finalist. Moreover, he discovered a possible pathway for cancer-causing mutations, thereby becoming a Davidson Fellow. A community leader, he founded a 100 member AIDS Walk team and bridged two continents by teaching English in China. As an All-State clarinetist, he has led several ensembles, performing at Detroit Symphony Hall. He is grateful to have served as Student Council treasurer and Science Olympiad President. John has been honored as both Coca-Cola Scholar and Toyota Community Scholar, yet it is the dream, not the accolade, of bettering humanity that fuels him. |

| Even when I was a little girl, I would scrawl snippets of poetry on the margins of addition worksheets and even on the wide-ruled paper they used to give to elementary
school kids and even on the margins of addition worksheets. English has been my passion ever since that time. I’ve found,
however, that it’s not only words and books that inspire me; in fact, science has struck me as of late as equally poetic. I have invested a lot of time trying to solve the
intellectual puzzles of my research, working on projects investigating various diseases such as multiple sclerosis, pemphigus vulgaris, breast cancer, and leukocyte
adhesion deficiency. On my school newspaper, literary magazine, and debate team, I have tried to develop these passions and pursue
my curiosity. In my free time, I love to dance, play tennis, and am a major movie and
philosophy buff. |
