| I never knew my country of birth. I traveled by car, train, boat, and plane before my first birthday. My diet shifted from rice porridge and tofu to Gerber's and government eggs before I could walk. I made the transition from communism to capitalism and didn't even know it. In short, I came to America. Since then, I've aged and done many, many deeds; but you can always accomplish more and better things, so I'll focus here on who I am instead of what I've done. I'm a left-handed Chinese person in the Mississippi Delta-- that's a triple whammy in terms of minorities. I have a passion for eating; I don't know where it all goes, but I enjoy it all the same. I like rice. I also have a passion for life. I love my little sister Christina dearly. And most importantly, through Christ I can do all things. |

| I am devoting my life to the service of others. Whether I am volunteering as a summer missionary for ten weeks in South Carolina or spending hours every day preparing to lead a weekly multi-faceted Bible study for up to forty-five area high school students, I consider service my top priority. Apart from attending school, I play guitar and piano, sing, run cross country and track, play soccer, mountain bike, adventure race, backpack, and enjoy the outdoors. My goal is to let service permeate my life, rather than squeeze it in. With this attitude, personal accomplishments and honors are mere byproducts of placing others first. As captain of the soccer and cross country teams, President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and an All-State athlete multiple years in three varsity sports, I strive to lead by example and use my influence to positively impact the lives of others. |

| Born in the city of Wuhan, China, cultivated in the Deep South, and torn between two opposite yet equally enchanting cultures, I have discovered my most valuable trait— adaptability. Despite the language barrier and culture shock of America at only six years old, I learned to cherish and even began to flourish in the land that I would call my own. As Vice President of Student Council, lieutenant of Accents dance team, editor of Images literary magazine, National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar, and student columnist for the local newspaper, I have utilized well my ability to adapt. Despite an innate shyness, I have been blessed with many friends. My classmates have voted me for homecoming court, class favorite, and even Winterfest Queen. I know that these wonderful accomplishments and honors would not be possible without the blessing of God. |

| A self-acknowledged over-achiever, I have made the most of my high school "career." From class president and vice president, to lieutenant governor and senate floor leader of YMCA Youth Legislature, to Mock Trial team
captain, to school newspaper editor, I have comfortably accepted many leadership roles. I delight in learning, and can often be found buried in a book. Raised in the Deep South with an extensive Irish heritage, I have a
great appreciation for culture. Blessed with numerous opportunities to travel, I am passionate about discovering
and respecting the views of those around the world as I strive to become a "global citizen." My home away from home, however, remains nearby: Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, where I have grown up attending church and youth group, and now lead a youth Bible study. Other passions include music--from singing in
the Mississippi Girls Choir to playing bass and guitar--as well as cooking, exercising, and community service. |

| I’m pretty quirky when it comes to academic work. As a lover of science studies, learning more and more about the world around me is my main goal. This, in turn, makes accepting things incredibly hard, so I always exhaust my classroom time with questioning things that I don’t understand. Outside of the classroom, I’m involved in community service projects such as Habitat for Humanity and Stewpot, and have worked extensively with a children’s home in the Hudson River Valley. Camp Rising Sun, a scholarship program in Rhinebeck, NY, that brings sixty students from around the world together for a summer of learning and experience, is easily the most influential and eye-opening part of my high school career, and the enormous foundation for my desire to achieve. |

| I have attended the same school for 14 years, and I’m grateful to my teachers and administrators for working with me, and to my parents for sending me there. Still, I am excited about college, and am interested in film and directing. Music, theater, and drama have always interested me. Last fall, I played the male lead in “Hello, Dolly!”, and for five years I was in the Jackson Academy Band, which won our class at national competition (Bands of America) more than once. I also earned a spot in the 2004 Mississippi All-State Lions Band. I’m seeking a profession that lets me have a positive impact on a large number of people, and cinema seems an obvious way to accomplish this. I spend much of my free time watching old movies as well as new releases, and enjoy are playing guitar and piano, singing, reading (especially Vonnegut), and playing video games. I have two accomplished older brothers, parents that love me, and I am blessed. |

| At the 2005 UCLA National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, I was one of hundreds of bright, competitive students. Although momentarily intimidated, I love a challenge, I love to learn, and I love people, so I threw myself into it. In those weeks, I gained faith in myself, as I made wonderful friends and worked with well-known doctors. In addition to my love of science that led me to UCLA, I love to exercise. Having participated since age four in soccer, I came full circle last spring to coach my own team of four-year-olds. Another aspect of who I am is my art, which I have channeled into volunteer work at a local art facility for mentally challenged adults. Also being a Classical Studies Scholar has allowed me to appreciate other areas of study in unique ways. I know now that I am prepared for the challenges of college. In fact, I can hardly wait. |

| I believe in working hard to achieve my goals. I am committed to becoming a physician so that I may have a beneficial effect on the world. I study diligently in school and attempt to learn as much as
possible every day. I love operating a variety of volunteer activities through the Boy Scouts and my church; I revel in seeing the faces of others when I have made a
positive impact in their lives. I also enjoy my free time. I play several sports including tennis, soccer, running, and ultimate Frisbee. My favorite pastime, however, is photography. I love capturing
images, forever frozen in time. I actually recently began creating my first photographic study! My motto has always been to seize life, and I will always live by that philosophy. |

| 100 percent of my graduating class has Finalist status in the National Merit program. Impressed? My class has two members. I have been home schooled alongside my twin sister Liana for twelve years. During that time, I fell in love with physics, calculus, and solving problems. This love and my lifelong interest in biology created my intended major, biomedical
engineering. When I wasn’t studying, I experimented with 4-H projects – as colorful as horse quiz bowl, dairy products judging, seed ID and quality judging, and horse art – and found opportunities to volunteer, like rehabilitating orphaned wildlife and providing horse-based therapy to the
children of my school district’s special needs classes. My pastimes include music, photography, and reading widely and insatiably. |

| Ever since the fourth grade, I have
somehow managed to find a way from my gravel driveway out in rural Mississippi to one of the best schools in the state nearly an hour away. Braving soaring gas costs and spending way too much time on the road, I have learned to appreciate the value of education and have pushed myself to make the most of it. From setting the school tackle record in football to founding the Chess Club, I have been involved in a variety of pursuits at school,
including serving as Student Body
Vice President in my senior year.
Outside the classroom, I love being
in the outdoors, playing the guitar, and being involved with my church. |

| I am Italy. The azure waves, the
craggy beaches, the museums filled
with priceless masterpieces, the
diverse cultures, the breathtaking
romance, and the rich history all weave effortlessly together to fabricate the Mediterranean paradise, Italy. From the citrus
orchards and Pompeian ruins in the south to the majestic, strikingly pristine Alps in the north, the Italian geography and range of cultures correlate to the diverse experiences and interests of my life. I, like the Italians embody
a vast collection of interests,
opinions, and beliefs, and embrace
my willingness to explore new views and experiences: volleyball,
Girlchoir, classics, ice cream, Law
& Order, religious studies, New
Zealand, family, environmental
conservation, high school rock
bands, scorching summers,
constellations, kitschy décor,
Seinfeld, U2, dream catchers,
ancient rituals, snow that sticks,
and 1989 Volvo station wagons. |

| Philosophy, my passion, is both an art and a science. Rigorous are the tests of logic, but beautiful are the metaphors. Rather than being mere academic interests, introspection and wisdom, the wrestling and constant struggle with the most preeminent questions of human existence, compose the substance of my present and future. I like to think of my life as both an act of artistic creation and careful calculation, a balancing act between spontaneity and responsible planning. Every artist needs training, and every scientist needs creativity. An overwhelming desire to effect positive change in the world underlies both themes of my personality. I want, most of all, to be the catalyst of a chain reaction in which human empathy and enlightenment spreads out from concentrated sources and pervades the entire zeitgeist. Philosophy should not be delegated to “experts.” Philosophy needs to be democratized. |
