| All of my friends from the Presidential Scholars Program will be happy to know that I achieved my dream of working in Mission Control.
I left NASA because I felt a deep need to make the world a better place.
I am now the Founder and Director of an organization called Strong Mothers Against Child Molesters (SMAC'M). We will have Chapters all across the U.S. Each Chapter will buy micro surveillance video systems, and make them available, free of charge, to anyone who suspects their child is being abused. |

| I attended the University of Idaho, studying Civil Engineering, but graduating with a general degree and a minor in Spanish. While at the University, I was elected Student Body President and worked as a lobbyist representing the University to the Idaho State Legislature. I subsequently accepted a job as a speech writer and special assistant to Dirk Kempthorne, then governor of Idaho. I worked for Governor Kempthorne over a period of six years until my graduation from law school at Brigham Young University and the governor's appointment by President George W. Bush as U.S. Secretary of the Interior in 2006. I am now an Associate in the Dallas office of Jones Day, a large international law firm. Immediately prior to joining Jones Day, I served as a deputy city prosecutor in my hometown and also worked on behalf of abandoned, abused, or neglected children in southern Idaho as a guardian ad litem attorney. I am married and have three beautiful daughters, who are and will ever be my greatest achievement. |

|
Orofino, ID, Orofino High School
|
| |
| Alex was born in Boise to Patrick Costello and Jeanette Gorman. He moved to Orfino, a small town in northern Idaho in 1990. While spending his senior year as a foreign exchange student in Tokyo, Alex learned how to speak Japanese and became part Japanese. His passion is writing of any type; he also enjoys wrestling, reading, and judo. Alex believes that the most important things in life are improving one's self and enjoying one's self- not necessarily in that order. Alex wonders why he wrote this in the third person. |

| Throughout my life, two basic principles have guided my actions. "Always do your best," my father used to tell me, lovingly brainwashing me into an assiduous student. The work ethic I have learned has helped me accomplish my best in academics, music, athletics, and community activities. In addition to practicing diligence, I have learned the value of compassion for others. From tutoring children after school at the Salvation Army, to ministering to the homeless at the local soup kitchen, to simply stopping to say "Hi" to students at my school who are sometimes ignored by others, I find great joy in touching people's lives. My desire for excellence, compassion for people, and interest in science have helped mold my decision to serve others as a medical doctor. |

Kathryn M. Elsbury
|
Peck, ID, Orofino High School| College Plans: Stanford University |
|
| |
| Katy is a National Merit Scholar with a 4.0 GPA who made the final valedictory address at her graduation ceremony and a hammer-thrower ranked among the top five high-school women in the country. She is also a free spirit who accepted her diploma with red nail polish on her bare feet and ribbon roses made by her little brother on her cap, a 6-foot 190-pound Amazon who won the limbo contest at her graduation party, and the only member of our local quilt guild under the age of 40. Her talent demonstration in the Junior Miss competition was "How to Field-Dress a Deer;" yes, she hunts, and she's never wasted a bullet. Despite all this, she believes that her most important accomplishments are the relationships she maintains with family, friends, and neighbors: she is as beloved by the quilt ladies as by her teachers, peers, and little brothers. |

| I have been lucky; my life has not been difficult. There are no great injustices I can claim to have overcome, no unfortunate circumstances over which I have triumphed. My life has, so far, been relatively easy; and for that, I am both thankful and slightly resentful. For if it is true that greatness or genius is predicated upon the existence of adversity, then certainly I can justifiably claim neither. Yet if such a statement is not true, which I fervently hope, then perhaps there remains potential in my disparate activities: my writing (I am now completing my first novel); my interests in medicine (I hope to become a cardiologist); and my volunteer work. I will attend Stanford in the fall, where I will truly see if I can compete with those who have known everything in lifethat I have not. |

| I enjoy diverse and eclectic activities. Stretching the limits of my abilities in all aspects of life is a perpetual goal. I have competed in gymnastics, archery, soccer and snowboarding; most recently in BoarderCross and Halfpipe at the USSA National Championships in Aspen, Colorado. I actively challenge my physical capability with Soo Bahk Do, a Korean martial art. My other passions include kayaking, mountain biking and all-season wilderness camping. I complement my physical interests with a significant commitment to musical, theatrical, community and academic oriented pursuits. I am a tenor in a local Choral group and our latest community concert encompassed music of American composers. My long time participation in Boy Scouting and 4-H has graced me with many community service and outdoor opportunities. My long-term goal in Scouting, completing the requirements for Eagle Scout Rank, was accomplished this year. My ambition is to pursue diverse interests throughout my lifetime. |
